Countless patients have experienced relief of lower back pain because of the experience and expertise of our pain management specialists. One of the main reasons for this is the variety of treatment options employed by our pain management specialists used to combat low back pain.  Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine has 5 offices located throughout Long Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

If you are experiencing back pain and are ready to find relief, the following are some popular treatment options that you should know about.

Nonsurgical Treatment Options for Lower Back Pain

Our pain management specialists typically use a holistic approach to treat lower back pain. Any or any combination of the following nonsurgical treatment options are commonly prescribed:

  • Pain medications
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Neuromodulating medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

The choice regarding which treatment option will be prescribed is based on the condition and symptoms of the patient that is being treated. If a patient’s pain does not respond to nonsurgical treatment, a minimally invasive pain management procedure may be recommended.

Minimally Invasive Pain Management Procedures for for Lower Back Pain

The term minimally invasive refers to a procedure that is performed using a very tiny incision or a via a small needle. Our pain management specialists are experts at performing minimally invasive procedures that reduce pain in a relatively short period of time. The three most common procedures used to treat lower back pain include the following:

  1. Anti-inflammatory, pain, and anesthetic medications are administered via injection into painful areas. The powerful and fast-acting effects of the medications provide patients with short-term pain relief while the body’s natural healing processes and nonsurgical treatment options heal the injury/condition that is causing pain.
  2. Radiofrequency ablation (RA). A very small needle and live X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) are used to perform RA. During the procedure, an electrical current is sent down the needle to gently heat nerves that send pain signals to the brain. A reduction in pain signals equates to a reduction in experienced pain.
  3. Spinal cord stimulator (SCS) implantation. A special device known as a spinal cord stimulator is implanted into the patients lower back. When prompted, the SCS sends electrical impulses that block pain signals to the brain.
