3 Common Questions About Epidural Injections

Epidural injections are one of the common and effective minimally invasive pain management treatment options. Patients who have an epidural injection usually experience pain relief very quickly.

An epidural injection can be used alone or in combination with other treatment options, like physical therapy.  At Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, our Interventional Spine Specialists and Physical Therapy team collaborate to create a customized treatment plan for all of our patients to maximize pain relief.  Listed below are the answers to three common questions that are asked about epidural injections.

#1—How often can I have an epidural injection?

The frequency with which epidural injections are given depends on the your specific condition. In some cases, you will get sufficient pain relief from just one injection and will not need more. If you need multiple injections, you may have up to three per year. A series of injections may be evenly spaced over the course of a year or given in weekly or monthly intervals. Injections may also be given on an as-needed basis.

#2—How long does it take for pain relief after an epidural injection?

Some patients experience pain relief the day of the injection. For others, it may take a few days as the medication is absorbed by the body.

As previously mentioned, other treatment options may be prescribed along with epidural injections for maximum pain relief. Physical therapy is a companion treatment option that can be very effective. In many cases, an epidural injection is used to provide pain relief so that you can participate in a physical therapy program.

#3—Can I go back to my normal activities after having an epidural injection the same day?

Patients are advised to rest at home after an epidural injection. However, they can return to normal day-to-day activities the day after their injection. If specific restrictions are needed, our Pain Management Specialist will let you know about them before the procedure.
